3 days to go...

The countdown has changed from going up to going down because I am SO looking forward to my LAST DAY (or the day after actually). I finally went for a jog tonight, after a week of time off it was very difficult. I only made it to 17 minutes. Hoping to get back into the swing of things this weekend.

B: banana, almond banana muffins, coffee
L: leftover chicken schwarma, salad, kiwi
D: avocado, tomato and bocconcini salad, kiwi, almond banana muffins

The home stretch!

Its the last week of my diet and I must say I have mixed feelings. While I love the 5 lbs lost and generally feeling "healthier", it has been very hard (and often a bit sad,) when I can't have what I want. There have been a few occasions where a deep fried, sugar coated, cream filled something or other has been the only thing on my mind. And I absolutely cannot wait until Monday when I can stop eating hard boiled eggs for breakfast every day. I also haven't had as much time over the last couple of days and so being on the diet has been extra hard. I will definitely keep some of my new diet habits in mind (I actually like the almond banana muffins and am better at eating fruit and eating smaller portions) but I look forward to being able to have the occasional slice of bread or chocolate. 4 more days to go!!!

Day 24:
Breakfast - banana and oj
Lunch - fried rice
Dinner - Sushi and a box of lindt (Sally and I agreed to a temporary reprieve so I could have chocolate and she could have a bag of chips, it was the best chocolate ever...)

Day 25:
B: hard boiled egg, coffee, oj, peanut butter cookies
L: Butternut squash soup, rice cake,
D: vietnamese soup

Day 26:
B: egg, coffee, oj, banana, peanut butter cookies
L: butternut squash soup, nuts,
D: chicken leg and rice, banana

Day 27:
B: egg, coffee, oj
L: chicken schwarma plate (rice and salad)
S: apple sauce
D: rice pasta with tomato veg sauce

Day 23

Today was a nice, relaxing day. I slept in, went to the market, baked peanut butter cookies from my Grain Free cookbook and puttered around my condo tidying up. So nice to have a Saturday to do "nothing".

B: omelette with pancetta, onions, peppers, goat cheese, banana muffins, mango, oj
Snack: 4-5 peanut butter cookies (turned out pretty good for no sugar/wheat)
Dinner: almond flour crust pizza, peanut butter cookie, orange

Day 20, 21 and 22

Tonight I just got back from a very long run with my cousin Mad and then drinks and apps at Globe Bistro with Saads, Raju and Mahi. My cousins thought I would not be allowed in as I was in my running attire (and still rather sweaty if I might add,) but they didn't even give me a once over and let us right up to the rooftop patio which was quite nice actually. A great start to the weekend!

Day 20:
B: egg, banana muffins, oj, coffee
L: spaghetti squash with meat sauce, apple, banana
D: Vietnamese grilled chicken and pork with rice

Day 21:
B: egg, banana muffins, oj, coffee
L: spaghetti squash with meat sauce (again... ugh)
Snack: apple, raisins
D: Green salad with grilled shrimp from Kelsey's

Day 22:
B: egg, banana muffins, mango smoothie, coffee
L: spaghetti squash again (the LAST time!)
Snack: nuts, raisins, tangerine
D: grilled steak, chicken, vegetables, marinated apple roll, glass of white wine (bad idea)

Day 19: An unsightly problem

I have developed a rather unpleasant heat rash. It started about a month ago and would only occur once in awhile on my legs or arms. Slowly it started to increase in frequency and also spread to my belly, back and now my face, neck and scalp. It still comes and goes but when it comes, my sensitive skin turns into a war zone. My back looks like its been whipped a thousand times. This morning I woke up with a little surprise, a huge red blotch right on my neck. I must have scratched it rather hard in my sleep and it sort of bruised into this red mark. You can imagine how a big red blotch looks on someone's neck. Rather embarrassing to say the least. I tried to walk around with a scarf on but later in the day it just got too hot. Luckily no one said anything. I'm going to start my "antifungal regimen" (as my cousin Cat calls it,) of Oil of Oregano, probiotics and Coconut oil tonight. We'll see if it works...

Breakfast: 2 almond banana muffins, hard boiled egg, oj, coffee
lunch: A terrible nicoise salad that I ended up giving away, bowl of popcorn, apple, 3 slices of almond toast (out of desperation for something to eat without going out)
dinner: "Spaghetti" with meat sauce (the spaghetti was spaghetti squash from my recipe book)

Happy Birthday Sally!

Here's a quick post to wish one of my best friends a Happy Birthday! Here's a pic of Sally at her 31st birthday, the year we stopped counting.

Long weekend report

The first "unofficial" long weekend of summer is over. Gerwyn spent the weekend in Vegas at a friend's stag so I spent the weekend "alone". Saturday I spent the day at Sally's family wedding shower (see pics on Sally's blog). We played games and most importantly (other than celebrating the upcoming nuptials of Sally and Ron,) I got to EAT! Cookies, chocolate, and BREAD! Whoo hoo!
After Sally's shower I went to my uncle's 70th birthday party. I was looking forward to another pig out fest (on cheat day!) but unfortunately by the time I got there the food was all put away. I did manage to locate the kalbi and chicken wings and went to town. I also got the last bite of my cousin Phil's Coconut Cream Pie which was deeleecious! A highlight of the evening was when I first walked into the living room and Charlotte started squealing and shaking with delight when she saw me. It was so adorable, of course I just had to pick her up and give her a big hug and kiss!

Sunday I spent the morning with grams. Since I was already at my aunt's house with grams, my mom and I stayed for lunch and enjoyed the previous night's leftovers. YUM. More kalbi and 5 pieces of cake later, I was satisfied! After all that cake, I decided to put an end to cheat weekend and resumed "project deprivation" after lunch. I went to my cousin Mad's house for dinner where they so kindly made almond flour crusted pizza (see pic below). It was actually quite deeleecious. Unfortunately my cousin Carol brought Williams Sonoma brownie mix for dessert but I managed not to cave and went back to my usual "dessert M.O" where I take a good long sniff and pass it along. :( We also spent a good part of the evening playing Taboo. It was my cousin Mad, Carol and I versus my other cousin Mark and his wife Meredith. Contrary to all of Mer's smack talk at the beginning of the game, we ended up beating them by one point. It was a very exciting game.

Today I met my cousin Mad again for a 9:30 jog at the Beaches. This time I didn't do as well, I find it hard to run in the mornings and I often had to stop. (Plus there were a TON of flies, I'm quite sure we both inhaled and ingested a good portion of the fly population.) After the jog, we met an hour later with the kids for brunch at Joy Bistro. After brunch we took the kids to the CN Tower. I haven't been in ages and surprisingly it was rather busy. Good to see Toronto still has a lot of tourists!

Its back to the regular diet again, I've baked more banana muffins so I have a stash for the week and also made an almond pizza crust to use later this week. 2 more weeks to go!

Diet Diary Day 16: (cheat day!)
breakfast: half a Tim Horton's breakfast sandwich (it was so rich!), coffee, juice
lunch: sandwich, tomato pasta, pork and chicken souvlaki, cookies, butter tarts, chocolate
dinner: kalbi, chicken wings, rice, coconut cream pie, fruit

Day 17:
breakfast: rice and seaweed soup, banana (not together)
lunch: rice, kalbi, other leftovers, 5 slices of vanilla pound cake
dinner: almond crust pizza, fruit, cappucino

Day 18: (back to the diet)
breakfast: hard boiled egg, oj

At the half way point!

Today is day 15 (whoo hoo!) which means I'm halfway through this diet. Its been rather enlightening and although I am slowly creeping back into my overeating ways, I definitely notice a difference when I'm gorging on only wheat and sugar free foods.

Tonight I met my cousin Mad and we resumed jogging on the Bayview Trail. I started at my place and met her at the riverdale bridge. From there we kept along the trail until we ended up at Fantasy Farm (that's practically at Don Mills people!!) I had to stop once or twice but I definitely improved since the last time and I pretty much was able to jog the whole way. That is until we got to the big hill at Pottery Rd. It was massive. I started out jogging but about halfway my thighs were on fire. I decided to walk the rest of the way while Mad did her usual running in circles around me. We stopped at magic oven so I could pick up some take out rice pasta and this time I managed to eat the whole thing. I was starving. I could have eaten my arm by that point. I have to admit that almost pound of rice pasta is sitting a bit heavy in my stomach right now.

Tomorrow is Sally's family wedding shower and one of our designated "cheat" days. Which suits me just fine because after Sally's shower I'll be heading to my uncle's 70th birthday and I know there will be a lot of good "cheat worthy" eats there. (I won't go too nuts though, I am on the diet for a reason after all. Wouldn't want to ruin all the progress I've made and gain back the 5 lbs lost.)

Day 14:
breakfast: soft boiled egg, almond toast, oj, coffee
lunch: swiss chalet chicken leg and salad
snack: fresh berries (which accompanied a lemon tart for a co-worker's birthday but I did not partake)
dinner: roasted veggies and chicken
dessert: orange

Day 15:
breakfast: same as day 14
snack: banana
lunch: spicy tuna maki, miso soup, salad and agedashi tofu
dinner: chicken, mushroom and veggies with pasta in an asiago cream sauce
dessert: orange

I have to admit, both the swiss chalet gave me a little stomach ache after and I got a wicked headache right after the japanese. I think the SC was because I was starving by the time I ate and had some hunger pains and the japanese food could have been due to too much salt.

We'll see what happens on cheat day. Isn't this SO riveting?!!!

Day 12 and 13

Tonight I met my cousin Hanna for a little exercise and dinner. She took me to her gym (Extreme Fitness at Dundas Square) and we did a hot yoga class. For a girl who never exercises, she was pretty good at all the yoga moves. There were many that I was not flexible enough to do but Ms. Hanna had no problem throwing her legs over her head or doing "the bridge". I kept feeling light headed and everytime I did my downward dog I felt all the blood rushing to my head. I don't know if I'm a fan of hot yoga, I might not have the stamina to try it again. But at least we got to reward ourselves with Salad King after. YUM!

Day 12:
Breakfast: hard boiled egg and banana muffins
Lunch: stuffed chicken breast and vegetables
Dinner: Vegetable Soup, orange, banana muffins and a chicken leg a couple of hours later

Day 13:
Breakfast: western omelette, oj, banana muffins
Lunch: roasted chicken leg, leftover roasted beets, apple/ginger/lemon smoothie
Dinner: Salad King! (Tofu panang curry, hot thai noodle and mango salad SO DEELEECIOUS!)

Day 11: Getting into the swing of things

Now that I have a full fridge I have to say this diet is much easier (and tastier). Tonight I made a vegetable soup (with chicken broth though) and it was quite tasty. I also made more banana almond bread but this time as mini muffins. They are so cute. And SO good. I added a bit more honey and an additional banana and I think I've finally found something that satisfies my sweet tooth. I've already eaten about 7.

Breakfast: hard boiled egg, coffee, almond toast, oj, banana
Lunch: quarter of stuffed chicken breast, yellow beans, beets, butternut squash, rice and leftover turkey chili
Snack: pureed apples with strawberry and honey
Dinner: Vegetable soup, mini banana muffins

I'm looking forward to eating the rest of chicken breast for lunch tomorrow and even having my soup for dinner. I also found a great recipe for stuffed mushroom caps which I will try later this week.

Meal planning makes ALL the difference!

Day 10

Above are two photos. The first is what I can have. The second is what I WANT. (Its a photo of all the desserts from our Mother's Day party. It was actually my cousin Mad's plate. I will refrain from making any comments about gluttony but I'm pretty sure she ate it all. Most of it in front of me.)

Tonight I decided to roast a bunch of vegetables so I have food to eat the rest of the week. I made a stuffed chicken breast with thyme, goat cheese and hot capocollo and roasted butternut squash, beets with balsalmic vinegar, asparagus, yellow beans and also stir fried some cabbage.Everything came out pretty good, the beets especially (although they took a long time, the vinegar caramelized and made the beets almost like candy.) The squash also got crispy and reminded me of sweet potatoes that I miss!

Breakfast: banana almond bread, apple sauce with strawberries, oj
Lunch: A variety of Korean food (rice, kimchi, stir fried mung bean noodles, radish, kalbi, the meat from my mondoo dumplings)
Dinner: Half a stuffed chicken breast, roasted vegetables

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day was spent at my uncle's house doing the usual: pigging out and then pigging out and then passing out. Unfortunately due to my no wheat and sugar limitation, I couldn't "pig out" as much as I normally would have. Dessert was especially a challenge as my cousin Mad and Hanna made sure to describe each mouthful of lemon cake, chocolate cake and caramel apple pie. It was torture. Charlotte and Samara enjoyed playing together and following each other around the house. They were very cute to watch. Even though my cousin Carol who is our usual baker couldn't make it to the party, she made sure to send her William Sonoma Lemon bundt cake. Now that's love! (If only I could have enjoyed some...)

Day 8 and 9: a busy day

Yesterday I spent the evening catching up with one of my best friends, Susie. Now that her office moved we can't meet for lunch anymore so we don't get to keep tabs on each other. Last night we met at Bar One for dinner and then I went to her place next door to watch "The Punisher". We had a choice of many movies but for some very odd reason, that was the one we chose. It was incredibly violent and I would not recommend it at all! Bad movie, but at least I got to spend some QT with a very good friend.

Breakfast: hard boiled egg (I bought Organic eggs and they are so hard to peel!), banana almond toast, oj, coffee
Lunch: Turkey Chilli
Snack: plantain chips and raisins
Dinner: Chicken Breast and salad
Snack: microwave popcorn

Today was a very busy day. This morning I met Evelyn to go shopping at Sherway Gardens. I was very happy to discover a Bath and Body Works and finally got to replenish my stock of hand soap and Vanilla lotion. After shopping, I had to rush to a hair appointment at the Aveda Salon. Its a school so my haircut was only $30. It was definitely a $30 haircut. Just the basics and I left with hair all over the place (she didn't dust me off) plus it was a sauna in there from this crazy weather so I was super duper hot the entire time. Not the most comfortable experience but when you need a "basic trim", its good to only spend $30. After my hair cut, I met cousin Mad for a jog along the DVP path. I discovered that Mad is jog nazi. I can only run for about 2 miles before I start to tucker out however my cousin was like a little Eveready Bunny and kept running in circles around me and even pushing me to keep running. I thought I was going to throw up. Eventually I convinced her to leave me behind and we met up again at the Riverdale bridge before I hopped on the street car to go home.

Now I'm waiting for Gerwyn to come over so we can watch Star Trek.

Breakfast: fried egg, banana almond toast, juice, coffee
Lunch: Turkey chili
Snack: Raisins, 6 slices of luncheon meat, banana almond toast

Day 7: $84.95

That's how much I spent at the grocery store today. I haven't had a chance to go grocery shopping lately so I've been having to eat lunch out every day. Not being able to have wheat or sugar means my lunches "out" are way more expensive. No more $5.00 meals at McD's or Subway. I've also been pretty depressed about not having any snacks at work. So tonight I finally got my butt to the grocery store and took care of some business!

I've decided that I really need to do a better job at meal planning. I've seen some interesting recipes in the new Grain Free Gourmet Cookbook I bought (thanks Cat!) and I'm now ready to try em out! Tonight I made Turkey Chili and my Almond Banana bread is baking in the oven as we speak. There's a great recipe for carrot fritters and spaghetti squash with meatballs, I'll try those next week. I also bought a bag of brown rice pasta, thank goodness I can have pasta again!

Breakfast: hard boiled egg, almond bread, orange juice (no sugar added), coffee
Snack: apple
Lunch: chicken souvlaki, salad and rice from Mr. Greek
Snack: 3 boxes of raisins, half a bag of spicy plaintain chips (my latest discovery!)
Dinner: Turkey chili (and a slice of banana bread as soon as it comes out of the oven!)

I'm feeling bloated tonight but I think its cause I ate dinner so late. I was quite hungry by the time it was ready. Headaches seem to have disappeared.

Day 6?

I can't even remember exactly what day I'm on, it feels like forever. I've realized how hard it is for people with dietary restrictions to eat out. You always have to ask if the food or sauce has something in it and inevitably it always does. Tonight Mel and I went to try Magic Oven, a wheat free pizza and pasta restaurant in the city. It was surprisingly very good! I was just thrilled to have pasta and garlic "bread".

Breakfast: hard boiled egg, almond toast, coffee
Lunch: burrito bowl from Z-teca (all the tasty "saucy" meats contained sugar, I had to have the grilled, dry, super salty beef instead)
Snack: A really hard pear that wasn't very good
Dinner: Rice flour penne with chicken and vegetables from Magic Oven (deeleecious! Haven't used that word in awhile...)

Good thing I only have one month of this.

Day 5

Breakfast: hard boiled egg (getting REAL tired of these...) and almond flour toast
Lunch: chicken leg with greek salad and fruit smoothie
Dinner: Tuna Sushi pizza and miso soup

I've noticed that I no longer eat until I'm 110% full. I actually have room to breathe after a meal. Its new and at first I felt very unsatisfied but I'm starting to realize that its kinda nice not being "uncomfortably full" after lunch and dinner. Tonight I met some highschool friends for dinner at a Japanese restaurant. My friend Sandra ordered a bento box and didn't finish many of her items. Normally I would offer to finish the rest (it was a bunch of tempura, my favourite!) but I couldn't eat it since it contained flour. It was hard to see it get thrown away but for once I left a restaurant without feeling sickeningly full. The only other thing I've noticed is that I've consistently woken up with a headache every day. Hope this side effect doesn't last much longer...

Day 4

Today I woke up hungry again. I've been craving sugar like crazy. I stare at ads for sweets and people eating who are walking by. My one dose of real sweetness has been my morning coffee and now I look forward to it more than ever. In fact, I am thinking about tomorrow's coffee right now. Tonight I tried to jog to my cousin Madeleine's house which is at Broadview and Danforth. I made it to Dundas before I had to stop and walk the rest of the way. I was going to meet my cousin Carol but ended up inviting myself for dinner since by the time I got there I was totally starving and they just so happened to be sitting down for dinner. Good timing!

Breakfast: boiled egg, one slice almond toast with butter
Lunch: leftover koobideh with rice and tomato
Snack: the most sour Macintosh apple ever which I forced myself to eat since I was cravinng something...
Dinner: rice, kimchi and other Korean food
Banana and tea

I've been feeling rather lethargic but I'm assuming that's my reaction to the sudden drop in sugar. I've also had to really think about how and what I eat. I feel like I've had to change gears in a way, I just think about food differently. Hopefully I'll soon change focus from mourning the things I can't have to enjoying the things that I can. 4 days down, 27 more to go. (Should've picked a month with only 30 days in it!)

Charlotte eats lunch!

Day 2 and 3

Its day 3 and I'm still alive (and still "unsatisfied"). The almond bread turned out pretty good actually but it didn't really rise like regular bread so next time I think I'll double the recipe so I can get an actual loaf and not a 2" rectangle. Its a bit richer than I thought too so I can only eat one or two small slices. Thank goodness Korean food has no wheat (and not too much sugar.)

Day 2:
Lunch: 2 slices almond bread, apple
Dinner: Sushi

Day 3:
Breakfast: 1 almond bread slice, hard boiled egg, ripe banana
Lunch: Kimchi jigae, rice
Snack: Coffee with honey and milk
Dinner: Koobideh and rice with roasted tomato (from Persian restaurant)

Last night Gerwyn and I went to see Wolverine. Being at the theatre was SO hard. All I could smell was buttery popcorn and hotdogs. (Popcorn appears to have no wheat or sugar, would it be ok?) I'm starting to notice how much I normally actually snack. I feel like I'm always looking for something to eat everywhere we go. I pass by donut stores and coffee shops and feel the need to go in.

This week will be the real test. Being at work and not having snacks plus having to find things "safe" to eat for lunch will be verrrrry challenging...

Day 1 Complete!

So in an effort to stick to this wheat/sugar free diet, Sally suggested I blog about what I eat every day. That way I know people are "watching" and I have a responsibility. So here goes. Day 1 was a bit difficult (I don't know what you're talking about Mad when you say the first week is easy!) I really really really really missed sugar. (Cat, please comment on anything I shouldn't be having because I'm not 100% sure if something contains wheat or sugar. I'm not going strictly SCD yet as I'm still having dairy and some grains... baby steps!)

Breakfast: hard boiled egg, banana, coffee with honey and milk, apple
Lunch: rice with rapini and italian sausage
Dinner: rice with rapini and italian sausage (I made a lot), orange, raw almonds

I've noticed that I woke up today hungry (my stomach was actually growling). Also, I don't always feel "satisfied" after I eat, but I have a feeling thats because my body is used to always having something sweet after I eat.

Today's breakfast: banana, scrambled eggs, bacon, salad, a bite of potato (just to say goodbye,) and coffee with honey, milk

I'm about to attempt my first almond flour bread. I'll let you know how it goes...

My week thus far...

Sorry no pics for now. But here’s what’s been going on this week:
- On Tuesday night Sally came over for dinner and while we were engulfed in surfing for wedding info online, my steaming broccoli on the stove totally overheated. I was made aware of this by the strong smell of burnt metal permeating the condo. I opened the pot to find the water in the bottom had totally boiled away and the bottom of one of my favourite Lagostina pots was completely black. As I started to mourn the loss of yet another pot, Sally quickly googled what to do and found what turned out to be a very good solution: Sprinkle the bottom of the pan heavily with baking soda and mix with a bit of water. Leave overnight. Come Wednesday afternoon when it finally came time to wash the poor thing, black burnt stuff peeled right off and my beautiful pot was shiny and sparkling once again!

- On Tuesday I also told Sally about my new wheat and sugar free diet for the month of May. I’ve been meaning to give it a try for awhile now and I’ve finally decided that May is the month to give it a shot. (Plus I could stand to lose a few pounds, that bridesmaid dress is a little too snug!). I managed to convince Sally to try it with me and we decided that whoever caves first will have to clean the other person’s bathrooms. Now that both of us have bathrooms frequented by boys, we know it’s a scary enough task that neither of us wants to do!

- Wednesday night Gerwyn came over for dinner for what was to be one of my last “wheat-full” meals. We were going to make homemade pizzas on fresh whole wheat pizza dough. As I was eagerly chopping the rapini (we were starving,) I managed to catch my left thumb and all of a sudden there was blood everywhere. Luckily I stopped after I cut through the nail and Gerwyn and I decided I didn’t need stitches. But I was a big baby after that. Gerwyn had to finish making the pizzas and as someone who has never handled dough before, his masterpieces were quite something to behold. (He wouldn’t let me take a photo.)

- Thursday marked the last day of wheat and sugar. I decided to go out with a bang by baking a dozen chocolate chip cookies and sharing a tub of Caramel Cone Explosion Haagen Dazs with Gerwyn. (Yes, we finished the whole thing.) I made sure to enjoy every last bite. Good bye wheat and sugar, see you in a month!
