Niagara-on-the-Lake

Posted by Picasa
This weekend Gerwyn took me away for my birthday getaway, a weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake. He booked our b&b and also arranged for a visit to their local spa. It was a very relaxing, very fun weekend. Here are some highlights:
- doing our first Icewine and food pairing at Peller Estates and then joining their wine club! (We get two bottles of wine delivered a month for 6 months plus all the free wine tours and seminars we want for us and four friends. Both at Peller and Hillebrand)
- signing up for 2 subsequent wine seminars the next day; Stem and Decanting, and Food and Wine. Both very interesting and tasty.
- getting a zillion different free samples in Peller's wine bar (free for wine club members, woo hoo!)
- getting stopped by a limosine outside of our b&b and asked for directions, then getting a free ride to our restaurant! Woo hoo!
- eating a Skor Caramel Apple outside of Rocky Mountain Chocolate
- the DEELEECIOUS breakfast at our b&b (four courses including dessert!)
- Gerwyn's car theft alert going off at 3 am and him running out to the car only to see it perfectly fine in the driveway (who's car would get stolen in Niagara on the Lake?)
- eating fettucine alfredo! (haven't had it since Olive Garden!)
- fabulous massages and use of the pool, sauna and hot tub at Prince of Wales and also their sister property
- free parking everywhere! woo hoo!
- coming home to an unbelievably clean and rearranged condo (Rosie cleaned while we were away, woohoo!)

All in all, a fabulous weekend, thanks for my birthday weekend Gervinder! Woo hoo!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Posted by Picasa
Yesterday was my big day. To celebrate the occasion Saadia and Raju hosted a dinner at their house and invited Gerwyn and myself along with some of my favourite friends, Susie and Josh, and Mahi and Raju's sister, Suzi. The dinner was amazing, as usual Saadia outdid herself with mushroom stuffed beef tenderloin and grilled vegetables. Gerwyn also surprised me by bringing my favourite cake, Strawberry Shortcake which he dropped off earlier in the day. And I even got presents! I know at this age, I'm probably too old for presents but I always say its nice to unwrap something on your birthday. Lucky for me, I have friends who are willing to indulge my birthday demands. Thanks for a great birthday Saadia, and thanks to everyone who called, emailed and texted me all day!

Bootylicious!

Last night Saadia invited me to watch Beyonce at the Molson Ampitheatre. I didn't have very high expectations as I'm not a huge fan but I have to say, her concert was amazing! She can sing, dance, and shake her booty in mega heels! I was very impressed. Her voice was unbelievable and when she sang 'At Last' with images of the Obama inauguration (she sang that for their first dance,) in the background, it was especially touching. She also did a short tribute to Michael Jackson which actually brought a tear to my eye. She ended the night by singing "Happy Birthday" to everyone with a birthday and seeing as how my big day is tomorrow, I took her song as a personal message just to me. Thanks Beyonce! (and thanks Saads for giving me the extra ticket!)

Wedding#2: Brian and Bernice

Posted by Picasa
Saturday Gerwyn and I headed to another wedding, this time Gerwyn's cousin Brian. We had barely recovered from the night before but managed to sum up the energy to party on! It was nice to be able to watch everyone and everything this time, I was able to take a lot more photos and hang out with my friends Mel and Norm who also happened to be there. Again we stayed til the very end and I also had an opporunity (although it was very short,) to check out some of Gerwyn's famous "house moves".

Sally gets Soriano'd!

Friday the big day finally arrived, Sally my pally married Ron and is now Sally Soriano. A few highlights from the day in the pics above:
- Sally and Ron's wedding rehearsal on Wednesday
- our wedding day breakfast from George St. Diner
- Sally and my dresses, all nice and steamed
- the new happy couple, Mr and Mrs Soriano
- Gerwyn's place card :)
- some happy wedding guests
- my speech is below (this will complete my best friends' wedding speeches, Saadia, then Susie, now Sally, I think my wedding speech career is now over!)

I know Sally posted the story about how we met on her wedding website, but I've been waiting 27 years for an audience and I'm sure there's got to be at least one person in this room who doesn't have internet so to that one person, thank you for giving me this opportunity.

The year was 1982. Sally had just immigrated to Canada so she was new to our school. Since she didn't know anyone, every day at recess 7 year old Sally would stand by the wall and wait for the bell to ring until she could go back inside. One day, our teacher Mrs. Stewart came up to me while I was playing 4 squares and said, "Every day Sally stands by the wall, why don't you go ask her to play with you?". Being the nice girl that I am, I walked over to Sally and said "Do you want to play with us?" No response. So after a minute, I just walked away. When I got back to my friends, I realized that Sally was behind me. She had just followed me back to 4 squares that day and she's been following me ever since. Even today, her wedding day, I'm sure the people who attended the ceremony noticed that she was following me as we walked down the aisle.

Tired of always being my follower, Sally often tried to take the lead. In grade 4 we competed in a hula hoop contest with our entire class and Sally and I were the last two left standing. We hula'd our hearts out and to this day we still debate on who the winner was. In grade 7 again we competed, this time for the attention of a boy. He was the only Filipino boy in our school (who was coincedentally also named Ron.) We would compete for his attention every day and were both burned when he chose a Caucasian girl from grade 8 to be his girlfriend.

But we weren't always in competition. There were times where we combined forces and decided to work together for the greater good. From grade school science projects on photosynthesis, to university projects on recycled paper to dressing up as the Ambiguously Gay Duo for a Hallowe'en party, we worked together, almost ripped each other's heads off, but eventually emerged victorious with a top place ribbon, an A+ or a first prize.

Then there was our greatest and most challenging collaboration without which we might not be here. One I like to call "The Pursuit of Ron Soriano". I remember the exact day Sally spotted him. We were at the Ryerson gym running around the track which was above and open to the weight room down below. As we turned a corner, Sally said "hey that guy down there is hot!" and as I looked down, there was Ron on the chest press, showing off his muscles. Not one to be aggressive, Sally refused to take the easy road and just ask him out. She decided to lay low and wait for him to come to her. Unfortunately that was a bit difficult when he didn't even know she existed. And so began the days, months, and years of stalking Ron. We started going to the gym a lot more and doing a whole lot more running around the track. Occassionally she would be brave enough to go downstairs and use a machine next to his. She found out he was studying Business Management so she would go out of her way to walk by the Business building in case could catch a glimpse. Luckily he always wore the same red and black checkered jacket so he was easy to spot. This lasted for what seemed like forever. I can't count the number of times she said to me, "today's the day Di, I'm going to talk to him" and then would back out at the last second. Instead she continued her passive attack, she obtained his timetable by looking him up in the Student Directory and from there got his email address. (Of course, she refused to use it.) Then one miraculous day, she finally went up to him at the gym and managed to get one line before running off, "I think we have the same friends." Still the shy girl from grade 2, she didn't even introduce herself. Eventually they started dating and later decided to just be friends.

Then there was the interlude where Sally again tried to assert her independence from me by moving to Montreal. She managed to last 2 years before realizing she couldn't live so far away from me and had to return. It was coincedentally also the time when Ron had decided that Sally was the one and they started a long distance relationship. But I'm sure that nothing to do with her return to Toronto.

Then one day I got an email from Ron with the subject line, "Call me at work, I need to ask you something". My worst fears were realized as Ron asked me for Sally's ring size. My loyal follower would be my follower no more. It was time to pass the torch.

All kidding aside, Sally has been one of my best friends for 27 years and I am so happy to sharing this moment with her. You are one of a kind, my sister and I know we will always be there for each other.

Ron, when Sally first saw you, you managed to make her days brighter and always put a smile on her face and that was without even saying a word. Now, years later, you continue to bring so much happiness into her life and I still see that smile on my best friend's face and its even bigger than before. (Especially now without braces.) After 27 years of knowing this girl, my message to you is this: In the many years of marriage which lie ahead of you, your relationship will have its up and downs but you can be 100% sure that no matter what you say, where you go or what you do, Sally's heart will always follow you.

Jumbo Empanadas and Osteria

Monday was a day of varied cuisine. For lunch I met Mad and the kids for a final lunch together in Kensington Market. We had Jumbo Empanadas and Empalvaldos (my fav Chilean cake). Then we took a quick walk through the market and then back to work. I'm glad I got to spend more time with my cousins before they finally left for Korea.

Monday night I met up with friends for Dora's birthday dinner at Osteria. Its the new Italian restaurant from the people who own Terroni's. I've been eager to try it for a long time and was looking forward to seeing the renovation. For a small restaurant, I think they did a good job making it more spacious. The dinner is a fixed price menu where you choose their 5 antipasti appetizers and then decide on either the "primi" or "secondi" or both. The apps were eggcellent but I have to say I was a bit disappointed by my pasta. They cook it al dente which turns out is a little too undercooked for me. Although it wasn't my fav, I would definitely go back to try it again. I think its a great concept and they are much friendlier then they used to be when it was Terroni's. Yummmmm!

Going Away Party

This weekend we had our last family party to say good-bye to my cousin Madeleine and her 3 kids. We had a pot luck lunch/dinner at my brother's house. Carol made the cutest teddy bear cake for Stephanie's birthday and my brother made ribs and steamed Red Snapper which was deeleecious. I made garlic bread and brought an apple strudel for dessert. Even though it was a sad occassion, it was great to spend time with the entire family and see the kids play together. Steph and Charlotte spent time in the backyard huddled by the fence. I had no idea what they were doing but they stood there for a good 15 minutes while Steph patted Char on the shoulder and put her arm around her. So adorable! We will miss Mad and the kids very much but look forward to visiting them (and enjoying many pig out fests) in Seoul. Posted by Picasa

Meeting the Gang!

Friday night I got a chance to meet all of Gerwyn's co-workers. When they usually get together, its for "boys only" poker nights but last night was one of the rare opportunities where everyone brought their significant others. (Unfortunately it was for a sad occasion, one of his co-worker's fathers had passed away.) Even though it was his father's funeral, Gerwyn's friend Peter was so friendly and warm, I really enjoyed meeting him. After the viewing, the rest of us went out for a drink at a nearby restaurant. It was a great opportunity to get to know everyone and although they are quite a bit older than us, you would never know it in talking with them. I hope that we will be as "cool" when our kids are in their 20's and we're on our own again. Gerald and his wife have two daughters over 20, I couldn't believe it from looking at his wife. She was in great shape and so hot! They travel, go for brunch, go to the gym, play tennis, and hit all the new hot spots regularly. I guess for some reason, I always pictured life after kids as much more quiet. Looking forward to more fun and games in the near future!

Weekend events!

Here are some pics from my weekend: Saturday night dinner with Tom and Sarita on the rooftop where Gerwyn made a deeleecious dinner of Lobster Tails with Vanilla Champagne sauce, grilled shrimp and vegetable orzo salad, and grilled scallop and fruit skewers. I decided to go with one of our favourite desserts, chocolate and skor cookies with ice cream and chocolate sauce. After dinner Tom and Sarita played Taboo with us and ended up winning due to Gerwyn unknowingly "passing" on a card and giving them the game winning point. That's what I get for playing after a few drinks. Sunday I went to Scarbs and visited Grams and played with Charlotte then headed to dinner at my cousin's place where Carol made pulled pork sandwiches with baked beans and chocolate pavlova for desssert. Mmmm mmmm good. I love weekends like this, good company, good food and lots of good fun!

Chocolate or chocolate?

Tomorrow night G and I are hosting dinner for one of his oldest friends. Gerwyn and Tommy have been friends since elementary school. I have only met him and his now fiancee once but they are definitely one of those couples that you'll know you'll like right away. Just very down to earth and friendly. We've been meaning to have them for dinner for a long time now and tomorrow is finally our night! Gerwyn has been busy researching all of his cookbooks for a worthy meal and I have been tasked with dessert. Just one instruction: chocolate.

I would have thought an instruction like that would be so easy but I have to say I'm torn over what to make? Spongy chocolate souffles? Creamy chocolate mousse? Deeelightful chocolate fondue with strawberries? How about good ol' gooey chocolate brownies? Or warm chocolate chip cookies with ice cream and homemade chocolate sauce? So many options! What is a girl to do....

Happy Canada Day!

I thought it was going to be strange to have a holiday right in the middle of the week but I have to admit, I'm quite enjoying it. Work 2 days, then relax and work 2 more days until the weekend. Today I woke up to a phone call from Saads who decided to stop by and pick up some things. After Saadia and Raju left, I had a leisurely breakfast and then got ready for a nice jog outside. I decided to call Mahi and we met up at our usual spot at Queen's Park. Unfortunately we only made it around twice before we thought we were going to pass out. Instead, we decided to check out the Canada Day fesitivites at Queen's Park. It was a gorgeous day and we enjoyed a hotdog and some roasted corn on the grass. Deeleecious!
